An osteochondroma is a developmental lesion which arises during growth in the metaphyseal region, usually of long bones. In this setting in the distal phalanx, an osteochondroma is never diagnosed. In addition, osteochondromas have very mature hyaline cartilage caps with endochondral ossification beneath them.
