A Krukenberg tumor classically refers to a secondary ovarian malignancy whose primary site arose in the gastrointestinal tract. Krukenberg tumors are often found in both ovaries. Microscopically, they are characterized by appearance of mucin-secreting signet-ring cells in the tissue of the ovary; when the primary tumor is discovered, the same signet-ring cells will be found.
Krukenberg tumors of the ovaries are characterized by mucin-laden, signet-ring cells within ovarian stroma. The source of Krukenberg tumors in great majority of cases is gastric carcinoma, especially from the pylorus. (Figure 1A: H&E stain and Inset 1B: ABPAS stain)
Other primary sources of Krukenberg tumors of the ovaries include colon and breast not uncommonly. Rare sources are gallbladder, biliary tract, cervix, and urinary bladder. (Figure 1A: H&E stain and Inset 1B: Mucicarmine stain) |
