Painkillers
What do they do?    Often called "**gesics",painkillers are  a diverse group of medications that interfere with the experience of pain.
How do they work?  Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory Drugs(NSAIDs) disrupt chemicals,known as prostaglandins,that are released when the body is in pain or inflamed . Morphine-based drugs work by blocking the receptors on the nerve endings that transmit the sensation of pain.
Who takes them?  Anyone in pain.for symptoms caused by inflammation(such as headaches or back pain), paracetamol or NSAIDs,which include aspirin and ibuprofen,are best. For chronic pain,or pain originating from damage to the nerves(such as sciatica or shingles),low doses of tablets that are also used to treat epilepsy and depression are the most effective. These include amit**tyline.
Side effects?  Mild painkillers have few side effects,although an overdose of paracetamol can cause serious liver damage.NSAIDs can irritate the lining of the stomach and lead to ulcers. Opiate-based painkillers can cause constipation,drowsiness and confusion in high dose.
